In the 1980's, mainland China had been open to American tourists for a very short time so we had an opportunity to explore a country relatively untouched by Western popular culture – relatively few hotels, no MacDonalds or Burger King at the time; no one selling trinkets at the Great Wall, people still wearing the drab Mao outfits
